The Japan Karate Association of Montville has been teaching Shotokan Karate in Montville for 19 years, beginning in January 2005 on Route 32. The chief instructor, Andrew Bakoledis, has been training for 34 years and earned his 6th Dan in the JKA in 2024. JKA Montville instructors and their teacher, UConn instructor Bob Jacobs(7th Dan), studied under the late Master Mori, who studied in Japan with the newly formed and burgeoning JKA and the founder of Shotokan, Master Funakoshi. There is no "new style" or "the latest trend", only what has worked and been refined over hundreds of years. Traditional karate and the means to mastering it are not always easily understood. Those who trust their teachers and are willing and able to persevere through the challenges the training provides for them, as well as the challenges life provides for them, will find a peace previously unknown to them.

Our dojo also occasionally offers "Martial Fitness" conditioning classes utilizing these highly effective punching/kicking/striking/ blocking techniques along with personal training methods for sculpting your body and increasing your aerobic and anaerobic conditioning. Known to most as "kickboxing" classes, we go deeper than hitting a bag for fun and train in a "self-defense" mode with benefits in both fitness and self-defense.
It's 45 minutes of fast paced & quick changing exercises with your personal safety in mind also.
